The Get Lucky Half Marathon Recap

March 19th, 2013 | Posted by Amy in Motivation | Races | Work Outs - (0 Comments)
Get Lucky 2013 Twin Cities Half Marathon

Last Saturday, I celebrated St. Patty’s Day by running in a half marathon; The Get Lucky in St Paul, Minnesota!

This month, in Minnesota, the weather has been abnormally cold, snowy and icy. Last year at this time the temperatures were in the 70s and there was no snow to been seen. Not this year! We have about 10 inches of snow on the ground and the temperatures are barely reaching the twenties.

Running conditions for this race were less than ideal. However, it could have been a lot worse. So lets get at it-

The night before the race we had drizzling rain and snow with freezing temperatures which created slippery conditions on top of already slick roads and sidewalks. The morning started out a little cloudy and cold with temperatures in the teens and a 12 mph wind making it feel like 6 degrees outside. I was really grateful because Adam parked the car close to the start line where I waited until 15 minutes before the race. I wanted to stay as warm as possible for as long as possible.

At the start line the sun began to come out and the wind didn’t feel terrible. As soon as the race began I knew it was going to be a challenge because I could see the ice reflecting off the road. There was very little to no salt on the roads. What the heck! I thought for sure the race officials would have been prepared with extra salt…nope! Plus, there was a thin layer of slush on the ground too. At this point there was nothing I could do but get my head in the race and try my best.

The course was an out and back course where you ran 6 miles out and then ran back. I have run races like that before and I actually don’t mind them. It pumps me up to see the half way point and physically turn around.

There were a few hills on the course. I remember a pretty long uphill stretch right before mile six. There was also an uphill around mile two which was nice on the back end because you ran down hill for the last few miles.

The race was very well organized. From the registration to packet pickup and race day, organizers did a great job communicating.

I didn’t train hard for the race. Meaning I didn’t run a lot. I ran 10 miles the week before and did a lot of strength and cardio group fitness classes. I also did a lot of hot yoga pre-race. My training schedule was much like the schedule I had for my October half marathon where I PRed. That must really work for me because I PRed AGAIN! Not by much…5 seconds. For years, I doubted the saying, “run less, run stronger.” But for me it works. I workout 6-7 days a week and probably only run 2 or 3 of those days. I try to mix up my exercising with group fitness classes, weightlifting, biking, yoga and running.

Get-Lucky-Race_2013

My official race time was 1:46:26 averaging 8:04 miles.

My Splits

12
1:36:40 + 0:08 (-2%) 8’25″/mi
13
1:44:54 - 0:11 (2%) 8’14″/mi

I wish I would have pushed myself a little more at the end. Those are some of my worst splits. I had gas left in the tank but mentally I broke down. I think I was bored. I know that might sound weird but I was just sick of running. Plus, I didn’t see the 12 mile marker so I felt like I was running on mile 11 forever! When I finally looked down at my watch I was at 12.60 miles and then I tried to kick it into gear!

Overall, I was happy with my time. Considering the weather it was a good race and fun!

The finishing metals were really sweet. The four leaf clover was green stained glass.

300 Runs

February 24th, 2013 | Posted by Amy in Motivation | Races | Work Outs - (0 Comments)

This morning Bayah and I went for a little run outside.

Adam is still recovering from his LASIK eye surgery and is very sensitive to light and therefore couldn’t get out to play with our dog. Bayah was dying to get outside and I didn’t want to stand around in the cold throwing her bird so I decided to take her for a run.

I normally hate running oPuppy Runningutside in the winter, especially when there is a lot of snow and ice on the ground. But I thought I could kill two birds with one stone- Get in a good workout and tire out the dog.

The sun was shinning and there was very little wind. I put on all my winter gear and laced up the asics and we were on our way.

There were a lot of slippery spots. You can totally tell from my running chart below where I slowed down to either walk across the ice or wait for traffic.

I mostly tried to run in the road and Bayah ran on the sidewalks which I was happy about because then I didn’t have to worry about the cars. Since I don’t run her with a leash she sometimes gets out a little far. But for the most part she does a great job listening and staying close.

6.3 miles later we were back home and Bayah was nice and tuckered out!

Not only was today a pretty good run outside but I recorded by 300th run on my Nike+ Watch. I hadn’t been keep track of my runs until I uploaded my watch from today. 300!!!! Just think, if I would have worn my watch every time. I never wear my watch on the treadmill. I bet there are another 300 runs on there. With a total of 300 runs and 1,870 miles that’s a lot of sweating.

And to think I hated running in High School. Never doubt yourself!

Yoga Capris with Ugg Boots = Warm, cozy winter walks and a new fashion style.

This week I ran a whopping 22.8 miles on the treadmill. For experienced runners that is not a lot and for me, compared to my summer running, that isn’t much. But for winter running it is more than usual. Most winter weeks I log between 10-15 miles.

Why all the running, you ask? I don’t know. I think I am just in one of those phases where I like the treadmill. Thank goodness because I have a half marathon coming up in three weeks. The Get Lucky Triple 7K will be my first race of the year. March races are always a little iffy because of the cold temperatures, ice and snow. I am praying for temps in the 50s. Last year I think Minneapolis hit 80 degrees which is really bizarre.

So with the increased amount of running are my legs feeling it? My gluts were a little sore this week but I don’t think it was because of the running. Squats and lunges are to blame. My treadmill running has actually helped my recovery along with yoga and foam rolling. I have become obsessed with my foam roller.

This is an important note about foam rolling. Usually my quads, hamstrings and gluts are most sore and my calves rarely feel pain so  I focus on rolling my upper legs. I’ve discovered that when I forget about my calves, I roll all the soreness down to them and the next day they are in pain. Has anyone else ever experienced that? Note to self- Roll out entire leg, no matter what.

Along with late winter/early spring running comes Lent. This Lent season Adam and I both decided to “give up” sweets. For those of you who know me, you know I love CHOCOLATE and ICE CREAM. It has been about three weeks since I have had dessert! And actually…it hasn’t been that bad. I haven’t had any intense cravings or “slip ups.” I know I can make it the full 40 days. I am really excited to finish this accomplishment!

With less sugar in my diet I am hoping to run stronger. So far I haven’t noticed much of a change in my workouts or body physique. I have however felt more awake.

To end this weekend post I would like to leave you with a new fashion trend. – Amy

2013 Race Line Up

January 22nd, 2013 | Posted by Amy in Motivation | Races | Work Outs - (0 Comments)

This year I really surprised myself and started registering early for races.

First up on the list is the Twin Cities Get Lucky Half Marathon on March 16th.

On May 19th I am going to run the Green Bay Cellcom Half Marathon. I am a veteran to this race. It is in my home town. Remember last year when the temperatures were so high they cancelled the race half way through?!

And the race that I am MOST EXCITED about is the SeaWheeze Half Marathon in Vancouver, Canada!

  • Who: I am going to run this race with my sister-in-law, Amy! Adam and I will fly out to Seattle, WA and meet Amy and John.
  • What: This is a half marathon (no full option) sponsored by Lululemon. It is the second annual. I’ve heard great things!
  • When: The race is on Saturday, August 10th, the day after my birthday!
  • Where: Vancouver, Canada! I have never been there and I am really looking forward to a new adventure.
  • Why: Why not spend a birthday weekend doing what I love- running and spending time with the people I love!

I’m sure there will be some other 10ks and half marathons that I do this year but I already have these three nailed down! A full marathon is not off the table yet!

Still not 100% pumped up for a full.

Tips for a Personal Best

October 21st, 2012 | Posted by Amy in Motivation | Races | Work Outs - (1 Comments)

**Please note that what I am about to say is very sarcastic!**

This morning I ran the Mankato Half Marathon and I shocked myself with a really nice PR. The weather was in the low 50s, minimal wind and sunny. I wore a short sleeve with a long sleeve over, capris running pants and an winter headband.

My official time was 1:46:31. I killed my old half marathon time by about 4 minutes! What did I do different this time-

Before the Race

1. I didn’t train. ( I did keep up a regular workout routine that included some running but not long runs)

2. I didn’t stress about the race.

3. I had a week long work trip the week before where I had lighter workouts and didn’t eat very healthy.

4. I did very hard workouts on Thursday and Friday before the race.

5. I had sore legs from those workouts.

6. I ate a late dinner the night before the race- Turkey Sandwich, cottage cheese and pineapple and water.

7. I had a cookie dough oreo blizzard at 9:30pm the night before.

During the Race

1. I didn’t look at my watch once while I was running!

After the Race

1. I was extremely shocked and pleasantly surprised! I saw the official race clock right before I saw my husband at the finish line and I screamed out to him “PR Baby!”

If you look at this “training plan” it is horrible! But I think because I didn’t over train and I didn’t stress about the race I was able to pull off the PR. Although my legs were really sore before I started the race, my mind was very fresh and relaxed. I was mentally prepared. Maybe I was just lucky…

Does anyone else have crazy PR stories?

Have a great night!

Here are a few pictures from the 2012 TC Marathon. The first picture is a shot of the front runners at the very start of the race. Don’t they look strong?!

Thanks to Instagram, I was able to capture this beautiful fall picture. This is around mile 17. I loved being a spectator this race! I really had no desire to run a marathon this year and I didn’t have one ounce of jealousy in my body. I think that is a sign that I needed a metal break from long races.

I am sure most of you heard people say, “listen to your body.” Well, you also have to listen to your head because sometimes you can get caught up in life and you need a little space to breathe. If you continue to train, workout and stay in shape, your body will be there when your mind is ready.

Twin Cities in Motion- TC 10K

October 7th, 2012 | Posted by Amy in Motivation | Races | Work Outs - (2 Comments)

It is race week this weekend in Minneapolis. Today is the TC 10mile and Marathon race. I opted out of the Marathon this year and decided to run the 10k race. Side Note- I really wanted to do the 10 mile race but registration is through a lottery and I didn’t make the cut.

It is freezing here this weekend! Low 30s with a crisp wind.

The 10K race was yesterday and I woke up at 6:30AM for a 7:30AM start time. When I was standing in the freezing cold I thought, “Why the heck am I doing this?” I came a lone, running 6 miles isn’t that big of deal to me and it was dark and cold on a Saturday morning. I wasn’t able to answer my thoughts until the end of the race (you’ll find out at the end of the post).

The race started up hill…who starts a race up hill? I wasn’t planning on running too hard and really didn’t have a purpose to run beside to get a workout in. I always run faster in racing environments and thought this was a good opportunity to get a good Saturday morning workout in.

The race starts and I’m dressed for a winter snow storm. I start running (up hill) dodging in and out of people. Mile one comes up quick and I am finally starting to warm up. After the hill is over, mile two approaches and then I see mile 3 and the clock. It reads 24:something. I think to myself “shoot I’m not looking so good.” At mile 3 the course turns around to head to the finish line. You can see the people still running towards mile 3 on the opposite side of the street.

So I pass mile 3 and knowing its not going to be my best 10k, I just want the race to be over. I pace my breathing and pump my arms a little faster. I see two people who I have been trailing for almost the entire time and I just want to put them behind me.

At mile 4.5 mile my throat starts burning and I’m not sure if it was because of the cold temps or what. Then these two boys think they can pass me. I let them get about 15 steps in front of me and then I see mile 5 and I know the race is almost over. I speed up and leave the two boys in the dust and then I pick off one of the runners I had been trailing. Next the old guy…

I loved this guy. He was in his 50s and wearing “windbreakers” jacket and pants. I can’t let this “old guy” beat me.  At mile 6 I pass him. I know I only have .20 miles left and I don’t want to look back but I can see the red windbreaker out of the corner of my eye. The old guy is racing me to the end. I am running so fast I feel like my legs are going to fly off. I really want to look at him and smile because we are the only two runners sprinter to the finish and he is racing me!

Well…he did cross the finish line before me but only by a few seconds. Rats!

It was at that moment I knew why I woke up at 6:30AM and stood in the freezing dark temperatures. It was because I love competing. I love the rush of crossing the finish line and I love adding the metals to my collection.

I finished at 47:34 minutes- A PR. 7:39 minute miles.

The Hardware!

Sweat, Burn, Finish!

All Women Run- Women Run the Cities

September 23rd, 2012 | Posted by Amy in Motivation | Races | Work Outs - (0 Comments)

There is nothing better than starting a fall Sunday morning with a race. This morning, me and some of my girlfriends from WGirls ran in a race to support local professional women. The race was sponsored by Minnesota Commercial Real Estate Women.

We formed a team and ran the 5K. It was a lot of fun and a beautiful morning…chilly but fun! The course was really flat and the scenery was beautiful. Summer is finally passed and fall is in the air with cool temperatures and warm colored leaves.

I have only ran a few 5Ks and I forgot how fun they are and how quick they go. I was just getting warmed up and before I knew it I was running back to the finish line. I really appreciate short runs because they help me stay in check mentally. I am not going to lie, I did have an urge to run the 10 mile but was more interested in supporting the cause and WGirls.

Our Team- Allison, Me, Sam and Mel. You girls Rock!

Up coming races include:

Minneapolis Twin Cities 10k- Saturday October 6th

and

Mankato Half Marathon- Sunday October 21st

Let the racing begin :)

You can probably tell from my Pinterest account that I am obsessed with Halloween and Christmas pins. I am so over summer, the hot days, weddings every weekend and jam packed weeks.

I am so excited for the fall candles, nail polish colors, leggings, boots and fall races. I have been getting so anxious that I already started taking out some of my fall decorations one by one.

My Latest Idea- Pumpkin candles inside mason jars with twine tied on the top. DYI, Simple, Easy, Inexpensive.

This year with fall coming I am even more excited that I don’t have the stress of training for a marathon. This summer has been the busiest summer ever and I am looking forward to some much needed relaxation.

Even though I am not training for a marathon I still have some races on the calendar. I am running the Twin Cities 10k in September. I didn’t make the lottery for the half marathon so I settled for the 10k. I just love the atmosphere of marathon weekend here that I needed to be involved some how.

I am also competing in my first team race at the end of September. It is a 5k and I am running it with a bunch of girls who are part of a non profit group I am in called Wgirls- www.wgirls.org. It should be really fun.

In October I am going to be running the Mankato half marathon again. The course is beautiful and it is close to our farm.

Instead of long training runs I have been using my extra time to do more yoga, weight lifting and spin classes. Of course, I am still running just not 20 miles in one day.

I’m a little sad that I won’t be running a marathon this fall but I really needed the mental break. With everything going on this summer I’m glad I didn’t pile on the extra stress of training.

Bring on the wet streets, cool temperatures and Halloween candy. I am ready!

P.S. Essie has new fall nail polish colors! Love Them!!!

The Happiest 5K on the Planet

July 15th, 2012 | Posted by Amy in Motivation | Races | Work Outs - (0 Comments)

Those of you who follow my blog probably think I dropped off the face of the planet! This summer has been so busy for us and I have been struggling to find time to blog. I give so much credit to those blogging, working, running mom’s who have time and energy to do it all! I don’t have any kids (yet) and I can’t image how I am going to make time for everything! (Time management and organizational tips are welcomed. :) )

As promised I wanted to post some of our firework pictures from the forth of July. We were in Idaho visiting family watching the fireworks on a boat that was literally 100 yards from the launching area. My iphone wasn’t capturing good night pictures but my Nikon CoolPix camera sure did!

And the Grand Finale!

The End.

Next, moving on to the Happiest 5K on the Planet. Today I ran the Twin Cities Color Run with a girlfriend. Registration reopened last week and we hustled to do a last minute sign up. I have only ran a few 5Ks and I have always ran them competitively. Today was not the case. There were over 19,000 runners, the temperature was in the high 80s and the race was not timed. This was a race for FUN! I think that is why they call it the happiest race on the planet. Another unique requirement is everyone has to wear white because it is a “color run” which means as you run volunteers throw colored powder on you. The goal of the race is to go in white and come out looking like a rainbow or as I said “LMFAO.”

I’m not going to lie, it was hard for me to get out of my competing mind set and just run for fun. I wanted to go fast, I wanted to bust through the crowds and I wanted to feel that racing burn in my legs.

What I learned today is- Sometimes you just gotta have a little fun and not worry about the time. I’m sure glad I let loose because we had so much fun! The race also made me appreciate my health and fitness a little more. I sure am grateful that I am in good shape and can casually run a 3 mile race pain free. It was awesome to dance through the color stations and get covered with powder. The music was loud, the people were excited and the atmosphere was so crazy. I am definitely going to run it again next year and build a team of people to race with. What races have you done for “fun?”

Tips to Running a Color Run:

  1. Wear sun glasses. You don’t want to get that powder in your eyes.
  2. Put your phone in a zip lock bag and run with it. You want to take pictures!
  3. Wear old clothes. That stuff stains.
  4. Take a shower soon after or you will look like a smurf the next day.
  5. Let loose and be crazy!

And Bam! This is how I am starting my week off!
